The Baltimore Orioles are baseball’s hottest team. Yes, you read that correctly; I’ll say it again for the people in the back…the Baltimore Orioles are baseball’s hottest team. Try that one on for size! Having won six straight coming in, they sent Dean Kremer to the mound against Anaheim this afternoon in hopes of keeping the party going. Kremer’s line: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K.

Despite being the hottest team in the league, the Birds still sit in last place in the AL East. But that’s a testament to the division as much as anything else. Yet, national pundits continue to overlook the Orioles. And consistently at that. And in fact you watch…as soon as the winning streak ends, you’ll see people saying I told you they were bad.

But savvy fans know that one game a season does not make. It’s the overall body of work that matters. And we’re nowhere near being done; odds are some struggles still await this 2022 Oriole team. But to date, the overall body of work exceeds expectations.

Perhaps the best moment of today’s game came in the last of the third inning, when Tyler Nevin came up to bat for the first time. His Dad, Phil, of course is the interim manager of the Anaheim Angels. He was suspended for the first two games of this series (due to the Anaheim/Seattle brawl a few weeks ago), but returned to the Anaheim dugout this afternoon.

Today was the first time that father and son had been on a big league field together. Father and son exchanged the lineup cards before the game and posed for a photo with the umpiring crew. It was the sort of moment that only baseball can provide. And it didn’t disappoint.

For the record, (Tyler) Nevin reached base on a single in his first at-bat against his old man. Needless to say, (Phil) Nevin had to have mixed feelings on that. One inning later in the last of the fourth, Anthony Santander’s RBI-single have the Orioles a 1-0 lead.

And when your pitching staff doesn’t give up any runs, one run is all you need. The back end of the Oriole bullpen was dominant once again, with Relic Bautista getting a key strikeout to end the eighth, and Jorge Lopez closing the door in the ninth.

The Birds will go for a sweep of the series and the home stand tomorrow afternoon at Camden Yards. Austin Voth gets the start for the O’s, and he’ll be opposed by Anaheim’s Jose Suarez. Game time is set for just after 12 PM.

Tyler Wells had a couple of struggles out of the gate for the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon in Kansas City. Just a couple. But the key was that he settled down, allowing his teammates to pick him up by putting some runs on the board. This whole Wells pitched to a quality start. Wells’ line: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K.

Wells gave up an RBI-double to Perez in the last of the first, and an RBI-triple and RBI-single to Isbel and Rivera respectively in the last of the fourth. And it looked like Kansas City was off to taking game three of this four-game set also. Again, it looked that way. But the Birds had other ideas for how today was going to go.

Cedric Mullins would get the O’s on the board in the fifth with an RBI-single. But the key moment of the game was one inning later. The Orioles put two on with one out as Tyler Nevin strode to home plate. And on a week when his Dad (Phil) was named the interim manager of the Los Angeles Angels, (Tyler) Nevin decided to keep the family gravy train going…

… it to mention the Orioles’ gravy train. Nevin smacked a three-run homer to center, catapulting the Orioles into the lead at 4-3. Make no mistake that with the Birds having had their struggles in the first two games of this series, that was a big moment for more than one reason. Obviously it was huge for the game itself. But it also seemed to energize the O’s, which bodes well going into tomorrow and onward.

Austin Hays would give the Birds an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI-single. They got a second insurance run in the eighth when Adley Rutschman scored on a wild pitch. And it’s a good thing they got those insurance runs, as Kansas City would load the bases with nobody out in the last of the eighth. But reliever Dillon Tate got himself out of the mess only surrendering one run – a sac fly by Taylor.

The O’s would go on to close out Kansas City in the ninth, winning the game 6-4. It’s a big win because it snaps a mini-losing streak, and because it gives the team confidence. Before the game Ramon Urias was sent to the 10-day IL with an oblique strain. As a result, the Birds selected the contract of Richie Martin fro triple-A Norfolk.

The series in Kansas City concludes tomorrow afternoon at Kauffman Stadium. Dean Kremer gets the start for the O’s, and he’ll be opposed by Kansas City’s Brad Keller. Game time is set for just after 2 PM.

Bruce Zimmerman got the start in Toronto this afternoon, but the Baltimore Orioles seemed intent on using everyone today. And given that it was the last day of the season, maybe that’s okay. Zimmerman’s line: .2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 1 K.

In a fashion that seemed typical against Toronto this year, the O’s fell 12-4. If it wasn’t Springer getting Toronto on the board, it was Springer with a grand slam. Not that it mattered. For this year, anyways.

Tyler Nevin did hit his first major league home run for the O’s today, a solo shot in the third inning. The O’s rallied late to make it 12-4, however this series was all Toronto. And today was no exception.

And with that, we enter the off season. The O’s finished with a record of 52-110, which earned them the number one pick in next year’s draft. Not exactly an “honor” you want, however it should help the organization at the end of the day.

And that’s the end – for now. So what comes next? Later this week I’ll publish a season recap. And we’ll enter the off season in earnest. It should be an active one, pending the league’s labor situation. This season was tough on everyone, but we made it through. And remember folks, hope always springs anew next year.
